Arabic AI receptionists: what works and what doesn't yet

How good is Arabic voice quality now?

Good enough to use, and not good enough to stop checking. Modern Standard Arabic is handled well by current models. Gulf dialect — which is what a caller in Dubai will actually speak — is noticeably harder, and quality varies by how far the conversation strays from the script.

The practical position is that a well-scoped Arabic agent handling twenty known questions performs well, and an open-ended one performs unpredictably. That is an argument for narrowing the job, not for waiting.

What does it still get wrong?

Three things, consistently. Proper nouns — building names, area names, and personal names — are the most common failure, and they are exactly what a property or clinic call is full of. Code-switching mid-sentence between Arabic and English, which Dubai callers do constantly, is handled but not perfectly. And numbers spoken quickly in dialect are misheard more often than in English.

None of these are fatal if the agent confirms back what it heard before acting on it, which is a configuration choice rather than a model limitation.

Should it switch languages automatically?

Yes, and it should follow the caller rather than deciding for them. An agent on a Dubai number should open in a way that works for both, then continue in whichever language the caller uses, and switch again if they switch.

What does not work is asking the caller to choose a language from a menu before anything else happens. It adds a step to every single call to solve a problem the agent can solve by listening.

How should I test it before buying?

Call it yourself, in Arabic, and try to break it. Say a building name. Give a budget in dialect. Interrupt it mid-sentence. Switch to English halfway and back again.

Then ask for the transcript of that call and read what it thought you said. The transcript tells you more than the audio does, because it shows you where the agent was confidently wrong rather than audibly confused.

Any vendor unwilling to let you do this before you pay is telling you something.
